Samsung predicts first quarterly profit growth in two years – The Verge

Samsung Electronics expects it made about 7.3 trillion won ($6.27 billion) in operating...

Samsung Electronics expects it made about 7.3 trillion won ($6.27 billion) in operating profit off sales of 51 trillion won ($43.8 billion) in its third quarter of 2015. If confirmed once the final figures are available later this month, that means the company is back to profit growth after seven straight quarters of year-on-year decline.
Last year in Q3 the company made 47.4 trillion won in revenue, meaning it's likely to be up around 7-8 percent this year. Operating profit a year ago was a disappointing 4.1 trillion won, so Samsung is expecting a year-on-year boost of around 78 percent.
Samsung hasn't given any details on what spurred the improvement. This year, however, the company decided not only to release the Galaxy Note 5 in...

The deals site Groupon is laying off 1,100 people and closing down operations in seven countries, the company's COO, Rich Williams, announced in a blog post on Tuesday. The company will be cutting 1,100 jobs, mostly in customer service and in its international Deal Factory department. "Evolution is hard, but it's a necessary part of our journey," Williams said. "It's also part of our DNA as a company and is one of the things that will help us realize our vision of creating the daily habit in local commerce." Groupon will close its operations in the international markets Morocco, Panama, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Thailand, and Uruguay. Last month, Groupon also closed its operations in Greece and Turkey. "We believe that in order for our geographic footprint to be an even bigger advantage, we need to focus our energy and dollars on fewer countries," Williams said in the blog post. According to a document filed with the SEC, Groupon will incur its job cuts at a pretax charge ...

The 11 biggest fintech investments in London so far this year – Silicon Alley

Financial technology, known as fintech, is a boom area for businesses and investors...

Financial technology, known as fintech, is a boom area for businesses and investors right now, and Britain is leading the way in Europe. London's pedigree in finance has combined with the booming technology scene of the last few years to turn the UK capital into a petri dish for financial innovation. Eileen Burbidge, the government's fintech envoy, told Business Insider: "The UK is emerging as the fintech centre of the world and London is the jewel in the crown of the UK’s fintech success story." Total investment in London-based fintech companies so far this year has already hit £357 million ($554 million), according to London & Partners, the organisation set up by the Mayor's office to encourage investment into the city. That's already higher than 2014's total of £314 million ($487 million), according to figures London & Partners obtained from CB Insight. London & Partners and BI have compiled a list of the 11 funding deals in the sector above &pound ...

Evernote, the first dead unicorn – Silicon Alley

This guest post was written by Josh Dickson the founder of Syrah, which makes...

This guest post was written by Josh Dickson the founder of Syrah, which makes a web content editing tool, and syndicated with permission. The original vesion is here. According to famed Silicon Valley investor Bill Gurley, 2015 will be the year of at least one dead unicorn. “I do think you'll see some dead unicorns this year,” said Gurley earlier in 2015 at SXSW. For all the talk in technology about embracing failure, we've seen relatively little among the highly valued companies known as unicorns. If no major companies are failing, and instead have access to permanently wide open streams of capital to fix insurmountable problems, perhaps we're in even more of a bubbly tech ecosystem than many think. And, if the risk of failure is essentially zero, late stage investors like T. Rowe Price, Janus, and Fidelity are certainly getting an incredible deal on their investments. With the average company staying in the S&P 500 for a mere 18 years as of 2015, it's crazy ...

Morgan Stanley wants Google to stop hiding how it gets its revenue, and there’s a good reason the CFO will listen (GOOG) – Silicon Alley

Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowack and his team believe that Google could add...

Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowack and his team believe that Google could add more than $100 to its stock price if it became a bit more transparent about how it makes its revenues. GOOG was trading around $541 this morning. Nowack's note is titled "The Pathway to $650." It reads like an open letter to new Google CFO Ruth Porat, who replaced Patrick Pichette earlier this year. Nowack can expect Porat to actually read this note, because she came to Google from ... Morgan Stanley. For a long time, Google has given almost no meaningful breakouts of the various products that drive its revenue. It reports sales from "advertising" and "other," and it breaks out United Kingdom revenue. It also provides percentage growth rates aggregate paid clicks and average cost-per-click. That all adds up to more than $60 billion in revenues per year. But the company has, for the longest time, said nothing about what really drives that $60 million: YouTube? Search? Mobile? Desktop? Gmail? No one reall...

THE PEER-TO-PEER PAYMENTS EXPLAINER: Why tech companies and banks are offering a service that doesn’t make money – Silicon Alley

A lot of money gets passed around informally every day — when we...

A lot of money gets passed around informally every day — when we pay someone back for dinner, pay a babysitter, or pay a roommate for rent. Now a bunch of different tech companies and banks are offering apps that can make this process easier and all but eliminate the need for cash and checks. The problem: there's no money to be made from facilitating these transactions. So why are so many businesses clamoring to get into this space?  The answer is different depending on the company — for banks it's critical to keep up with consumers' account needs while for social messaging apps it's a broader play for the e-commerce market. In a new report from BI Intelligence, we explore the market for P2P payments, how they work, and the types of businesses that are offering these services and why. Access the Full Report By Signing Up For A Trial Membership Today >> Here are some of the key takeaways from the report: We estimate that US annual peer-to-peer (P2P) payments &mdas ...
