Apple hired a ‘secret agent’ who is an expert in digital license plates for cars (AAPL) – Silicon Alley
Apple has hired an engineer who has extensive knowledge of digital license plates, and it looks like he's working on the company's rumoured Apple Car. Electrek reports that engineer Rónán Ó Braonáin has updated his LinkedIn profile to "Secret Agent" on "special projects" at Apple. Ó Braonáin was previously the director of engineering at Reviver, a company that builds digital license plates. A digital license plate is totally different to a physical license plate. It is, essentially, a screen that can be affixed to vehicles and updated with new information. That's useful because it lets companies manage fleets of vehicles and include different information for each driver. Apple has never officially announced that it is working on a car, but it's looking increasingly obvious. The development of Apple's car is reportedly called "Project Titan" and the company has hundreds of people working in that department...

Apple’s Phil Schiller reveals secret Retina MacBook features in wide-ranging interview – BGR
In a rare interview, Apple’s Phil Schiller shared more details about the Retina MacBook, including secret features that Apple has never really talked about. On its face, this seems a little strange. Sure, Apple talks about its products with the media all the time by promoting them before or around launch. Earlier this year, for example, Apple gave multiple news sites and publications access to the Apple Watch before it hit stores and it also talked extensively about Apple Music. But it’s definitely strange to see Apple pitch the Retina MacBook during an interview — the device was released this past March, after all — rather than focus on the recently launched iPhone 6s and Apple TV or the upcoming iPad...

Android is the world’s largest mobile platform — but it has to overcome these massive hurdles to keep the lead – Silicon Alley
The smartphone market has expanded from a small and limited business in some regions to a large and robust ecosystem that spans the globe, and Android has emerged as the single-largest smartphone platform. Android has 1.4 billion monthly active users on its smartphones and tablets thanks to its enormous selection and ability to appeal to numerous segments of the smartphone consumer market. Despite its success, Android faces an uncertain future. Due to its open-source variants, the Android ecosystem is highly fragmented, which presents numerous issues in terms of security and app development. As key smartphone markets shift from developed regions like the US and China to emerging markets like India and Brazil, Google will try to maintain its control of Android via its Android One project, while third-party vendors will push regionalized versions of Android to better cater to new consumer markets. In a new report from BI Intelligence, we size up the current Android platform...

Europe could lead the way on Android’s great unbundling – Venture Beat
ANALYSIS: Europe’s seemingly never-ending battle with U.S. tech companies continued this week when a top European court ruled the U.S. “Safe Harbor” pact was invalid, thus throwing trans-Atlantic data-sharing into question. But this is just one of many examples of how technology faces barriers when different laws, legislation, and cultures are at play. Uber, too, has been ...

Samsung denies accusations it cheated in TV lab tests – TechRadar
Samsung has denied recent claims its TVs have been built to cheat at tests following allegations that Volkswagen-style "Defeat Devices" could have been used to fool regulators about environmental standards. The claims, which were made in The Guardian this morning, suggested the South Korean firm's televisions used a feature called "Motion Lighting" to reduce power consumption during lab tests in a way that would never happen in real life, therefore giving a false indication about how much power one can expect it to consume.Writing on the company's corporate blog, Samsung Tomorrow, the company strongly denied that it was attempting to trick test results - and that Motion Lighting was a normal part of TV operation. It said: "It is a standard out-of-the-box feature, which is switched on when the customer takes delivery of their TV, and remains on whenever the customer chooses to watch their TV in Standard viewing mode."Power balanceThe way Motion Lighting works is that when there is a lot ...

The iPhone 6s outperforms the 2015 MacBook in some tests, which says a lot about the iPad Pro – TheNextWeb – Relevant Blogs
Although the iPhone’s ‘s’ models aren’t normally as hype-worthy as the full version upgrades, one thing you can always expect out of them is top notch performance. This year’s iPhone 6s, however, has the special honor of being as powerful as one of Apple’s newest laptops, the 2015 MacBook. John Gruber from Daring Fireball benchmarked the iPhone 6S using Geerkbench 3, a multi-platform testing tool designed to measure overall computer performance. Needless to say, the results are impressive. The phone’s A9 chip can outperform or beat the $1300 1.1 Ghz MacBook, and nearly go head to head with the 1.3Ghz model: Test iPhone 6s…
