Digital Networks Act: Member States Put the Brakes on the Commission’s Ambitions

While supported in its objectives but contested in its mechanisms, the Digital Networks Act—developed at the Berlaymont—raised numerous concerns during this morning’s Telecoms Council. Several Member States have criticized excessive centralization and are calling for more time to negotiate.

The European Commission would like to move quickly on the Digital Networks Act (DNA), its major telecommunications reform presented in January. But the discussions held Tuesday at the Telecoms Council show that rapid adoption is far from guaranteed. While Member States broadly support the objectives set out by Brussels, they contest several of the means chosen to achieve them, particularly the centralization of certain powers at the European level.
