In Depth: Android in 2020: how much could Google’s OS change? – TechRadar

In the beginningCast your mind back to late 2008, when the first Android-powered handset saw the light of day. Obama won his first Presidential election, Apple launched its App Store (the iPhone had appeared the year before), Google announced its own Chrome browser and we got our first look at the company's new mobile OS on the T-Mobile G1.The Android of 2016 is a world away from that 2008 version, where the Android Market was in its infancy, there were no native video playback capabilities embedded and the G1 had no multi-touch support. In short, it was a phone that sat very happily on the pile of 'might make it big one day if the stars align' moonshots that companies were throwing out at that time. But Google did make a success of Android, seeing it grow to the most dominant operating system in the smartphone world - but it will need to keep innovating and improving its mobile OS to keep that lion's share. We've re-tooled this article to take a peek into the future with our new knowledge...

Almost exactly four years ago, Samsung's marketing boss sat down for an interview and made a claim that seemed almost comical at the time. There was a bit of a language barrier, but the gist of Young-Hee Lee's bold claim was this: People had been obsessed with Apple's iPhone line for long enough, and Samsung was going to shift their obsession to Galaxy phones. If only it were that easy, right? Well, as it turns out, it is that easy when you've got a massive smartphone division and tens of billions of dollars to spend on marketing. At the time of the interview, Samsung had already set in motion a major shift in its advertising strategy that had two goals...

Apple won't release a big update to the Apple Watch in March, contrary to reports, according to TechCrunch.
Matthew Panzarino, a long-time Apple watcher, cites inside sources who claim Apple has not been developing a new version of the Watch software. He says that any new model will be a smaller update, rather than a big, new version of the device.
Ben Bajarin, an independent analyst, also said that Apple's supply chain, which will be used to make the new Apple Watch, had not seen significant changes in production levels.
"With the supply chain cuts from the usual suspects of Apple component providers, the timing does seem suspect for a new product given orders would have taken place in the latter part of 2015 if a new product is shipping first half of 2016," Bajarin told TechCrunch.
However, Bajarin does note that the supply chain was not an accurate indicator of the first Apple Watch, and so the signs of an updated model could have been missed.

Neil Cybart, “The Two Apples”:

Just as Wall Street is nervous about AAPL’s changing revenue
sources, Apple’s ultimate success is built on that very ideal.
Even though Apple was the “iPod company” yesterday and the “iPhone
company” today, management’s goal is to make sure that Apple will
one day be known as something else, such as the “car company” or
the “personal transport company.” This isn’t to suggest that Apple
will change its culture and mission statement depending on where
growth can be found. Instead, management looks to enter product
categories that make it possible to advance Apple’s goal of making
technology more personal. In the beginning, such a goal was
achieved with the Mac but soon included the iPod, then iPhone and
iPad, and now Apple Watch...

Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, one of the better-known analysts who covers Apple, has joined the ranks of his colleagues and competitors who are predicting a decline in iPhone sales when CEO Tim Cook reports his December quarterly earnings on January 26.
Of the seven most recent analyst reports that Business Insider has viewed, all of them now predict an upcoming slump in the number of iPhone units sold. One group, Pacific Crest, all but accused Apple of shading the truth about its sales prospects in a previous earnings call, in a note that said, "Management's confidence now looks highly likely to be misplaced, which suggests that it was either ignorant of the challenges it faced or deliberately overstating underlying trends."
Apple has never before reported a decline in iPhone sales. Although the stock has already declined 26% over the last few months, analysts have not yet booked-in an actual reported decline to their models. And the tech industry generally has ne ...

Apple says that it accidentally provided publishers with inaccurate data about traffic from its Apple News app and it undercounted the number of people who were reading stories, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Apple released its News app last year as part of its iOS 9 software update. The app brings together news and content from lots of publications that choose to be listed on the platform.
However, The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple undercounted the number of people viewing stories on Apple News.
“We’re in the process of fixing that now, but our numbers are lower than reality,” Apple executive Eddy Cue said. “We don’t know what the right number is." Cue did say, however, that 40 million people have used the Apple News app since launch.
Publications such as Business Insider, Vice, and The New York Times all include their content on the Apple News app. If they sell ads on the content themselves then they can keep 100% of the revenu...

Microsoft signed a deal that could bring its virtual assistant to 50 million phones (MSFT) – Silicon Alley

Microsoft has expanded its partnership with Cyanogen, the maker of a popular version...

Microsoft has expanded its partnership with Cyanogen, the maker of a popular version of Android, to integrate Cortana, the Siri-like virtual assistant, more deeply, WinBeta reports.
CyangoenMod, which is an operating system based on Android but not affiliated with Google, is used on over 50 million handsets, as of August 2015.
Microsoft's mobile operating system, named Windows 10 Mobile, has been struggling to gain traction, and the deal with Cyanogen — which didn't involve a monetary investment — helps get the company's services, namely Cortana, onto more devices.
Cortana can, on Cyanogen-enabled phones, put the device to sleep, toggle network settings on-and-off, answer voice commands, and more.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has changed the company's vision since he took the reigns in February 2014. The old Microsoft would most likely not have worked on a deal with a third-party, choosing instead to build the technology itself. However, Nadella's goa ...

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 will have a pressure-sensing screen: WSJ – The Verge

Samsung's Galaxy S7 is coming in March and will feature a pressure-sensitive screen similar to the 3D Touch display Apple introduced with the iPhone 6S, The Wall Street Journal reports. Like Samsung's current flagship, the Galaxy S6, the S7 will also reportedly have an "Edge" variant with a curved screen; one source says the regular, non-Edge version is likely to have expandable storage, unlike both S6 models.
The WSJ says the S7 will look "largely similar" to the S6, but while the camera is said to have been improved, there will reportedly be no "bump" on the back of the phone to accommodate the optics. Other mooted features include a USB-C port with fast-charging capability, and the possible inclusion of a retina scanner to "some...
