Slowly but steadily, Apple is picking off more and more former Android users. A new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners indicates that 26% of people who bought the iPhone 6s within its first month of release switched over from Android. In previous years, Android switchers accounted for 12% of iPhone 6 buyers and for 23% of iPhone 5s buyers in CIRP’s surveys. DON’T MISS: 4 times Apple has shamelessly ripped off its fans “The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus launch attracted a greater percentage of Android owners compared to a year ago,” explains Mike Levin, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP. “This says a little more about the very hot iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch, which motivated more iPhone upgrades than...

It was confirmed last month that an official Pepsi Phone would be coming in the near future and after much speculation, it has finally been unveiled.Though it has Pepsi branding, the Pepsi Phone is part of a crowdfunding campaign by Koobee (which closes on December 3) and is aimed exclusively at the Chinese market.Essentially a rebranded Koobee H7, the Pepsi Phone sports a 5.5-inch 1080p display on 2.5D curved glass, a MediaTek MT6592 1.7GHz octa-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage and dual SIM support (you can use the second slot for microSD expansion up to 64GB).It's also got a 5-megapixel front-facing camera (presumably to take crisp shots of yourself enjoying a refreshing Pepsi), while on the rear you'll find a 13-megapixel camera with a fingerprint sensor right below it.The Pepsi Phone comes in Silver, Gold and Blue, and is being released in two different versions: the P1 (AU$108/US$78/£51), which is limited to (an already sold out) 1000 units and is bound to carr ...

Jony Ive explained why Apple did a U-turn on making a stylus (AAPL) – Silicon Alley

Apple chief design officer, Jony Ive, sat down for an interview with Wallpaper...

Apple chief design officer, Jony Ive, sat down for an interview with Wallpaper Magazine and revealed why the company did a U-turn on making a stylus, something Steve Jobs famously decried.  The iPad Pro comes with a Pencil, an electronic stylus that is aimed at those who draw. Jobs famously said that any company that included a stylus "blew it." "It was fundamentally important originally not to develop a user interface that required another instrument," Ive said. "It was important that we develop the UI based upon multi-touch, based on our fingers." This explains why Jobs disliked the stylus.  However, the focus changed with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. "I think it is equally obvious that you’re just not as dexterous as you are with a pen or a pencil for certain things," Ive continued. These certain things are exactly what the Pro, which launched in early November, is aimed at.  "What we found is that there’s clearly a group of people that would value an instrument...

iPad Pro beats Retina MacBook, MacBook Pro and Surface Pro 4 in benchmarks – BGR

The iPad Pro might not be ready to replace your PC just yet...

The iPad Pro might not be ready to replace your PC just yet as Apple CEO Tim Cook would like it to, but the bigger tablet certainly has what it takes to pull it off. The hardware is there, many reviews have shown, though there’s plenty of work on the software side to turn the iPad Pro into the mobile computer that will replace your traditional PC. One interesting thing certain reviews showed is that the iPad Pro’s hardware is so powerful that the tablet will be able to beat many competitors in benchmark tests, including the latest MacBooks and the Surface Pro 4. In fact, it appears Apple’s processors has come to a point where it could become the ...

Tim Cook: ‘iPad Pro Is a Replacement for a Notebook or a Desktop for Many, Many People’ – Daring Fireball

Tim Cook, in London for iPad Pro promotional interviews, to The Telegraph:

“Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop
for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they
no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones,”
Cook argues in his distinctly Southern accent (he was born in
Alabama). He highlights two other markets for his 12.9 inch
devices, which go on sale online on Wednesday. The first are
creatives: “if you sketch then it’s unbelievable… you don’t want
to use a pad anymore,” Cook says.

Cook told The Independent in a separate interview that the only devices he’s traveling with are his iPad Pro and iPhone.

Interesting tidbit here:

Cook hints that Apple may have more plans for the health sphere,
in a revelation which will intrigue Wall Street, but he doesn’t
want the watch itself to become a regulated, government-licensed
health product...

Apple hired a ‘secret agent’ who is an expert in digital license plates for cars (AAPL) – Silicon Alley

Apple has hired an engineer who has extensive knowledge of digital license plates, and it looks like he's working on the company's rumoured Apple Car. Electrek reports that engineer Rónán Ó Braonáin has updated his LinkedIn profile to "Secret Agent" on "special projects" at Apple. Ó Braonáin was previously the director of engineering at Reviver, a company that builds digital license plates. A digital license plate is totally different to a physical license plate. It is, essentially, a screen that can be affixed to vehicles and updated with new information. That's useful because it lets companies manage fleets of vehicles and include different information for each driver. Apple has never officially announced that it is working on a car, but it's looking increasingly obvious. The development of Apple's car is reportedly called "Project Titan" and the company has hundreds of people working in that department...

In a rare interview, Apple’s Phil Schiller shared more details about the Retina MacBook, including secret features that Apple has never really talked about. On its face, this seems a little strange. Sure, Apple talks about its products with the media all the time by promoting them before or around launch. Earlier this year, for example, Apple gave multiple news sites and publications access to the Apple Watch before it hit stores and it also talked extensively about Apple Music. But it’s definitely strange to see Apple pitch the Retina MacBook during an interview — the device was released this past March, after all — rather than focus on the recently launched iPhone 6s and Apple TV or the upcoming iPad...

Android is the world’s largest mobile platform — but it has to overcome these massive hurdles to keep the lead – Silicon Alley

The smartphone market has expanded from a small and limited business in some regions...

The smartphone market has expanded from a small and limited business in some regions to a large and robust ecosystem that spans the globe, and Android has emerged as the single-largest smartphone platform. Android has 1.4 billion monthly active users on its smartphones and tablets thanks to its enormous selection and ability to appeal to numerous segments of the smartphone consumer market.  Despite its success, Android faces an uncertain future. Due to its open-source variants, the Android ecosystem is highly fragmented, which presents numerous issues in terms of security and app development. As key smartphone markets shift from developed regions like the US and China to emerging markets like India and Brazil, Google will try to maintain its control of Android via its Android One project, while third-party vendors will push regionalized versions of Android to better cater to new consumer markets. In a new report from BI Intelligence, we size up the current Android platform...
