"Skyfall" will shatter the record for the biggest James Bond movie debut ever, after taking in $30.8 million at the box office on Friday.
That's an average of nearly $8,787 from each of the 3,505 theaters that the 23rd film in the 50-year-old 007 franchise is playing on. That could translate to an $80 million weekend. It received an "A" CinemaScore from first-day moviegoers, so word of mouth should be strong on Saturday and Sunday.

"Skyfall" took in an additional $2.2 million from exclusive preview runs at 463 Imax and premium pricing locations on Thursday.
Last week's No. 1 film, Disney's animated family film "Wreck-It Ralph," was No. 2 on Friday, taking in $7.8 million from 3,752 screens. That puts it on track for a $32 million weekend and raises its overall gross to $68.4 million. Those two films are driving the overall box office, which is running roughly 20 percent ahead of ...

"The Simpsons" may get another shot at an Oscar thanks to a short starring Maggie Simpson, the youngest member of the yellow family from Springfield.

The Academy has narrowed its list for the Animated Short Award from 56 to 10, it announced on Friday, and that list includes "Maggie Simpson in 'The Longest Daycare.'" The short, written by "Simpsons" lifers like James L. Brooks and Matt Groening, aired before screenings of "Ice Age: Continental Drift."
The four-and-a-half-minute 3D short pits Maggie against her nemesis, Baby Gerald.
The Academy shut "The Simpsons Movie" out of the 2008 awards, prompting the legendary animated show to mock the Oscars before the 2011 awards.
The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 10, 2013 and the awards themselves will take place Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Here are the nine other short-list nominees for best animated short:
"Adam and Dog," Minkyu Lee, director (Lodge Films)

When it comes to digital music, you have to be a hard-ass at the negotiating table, Spotify founder Daniel Ek told Sarah Lacy at PandoMonthly tonight.

Music labels are notoriously difficult to deal with and have endured a lot of criticism in recent years for being slow to adapt to the digital age. So being smart in dealing with those companies was crucial to protecting Spotify's integrity and ensuring its long-term success. “You have to lead with your conviction in the product," Ek said.

Sony executive Tim Schaaff, hired away from Apple in 2005 to help the Japanese electronics giant regain its footing in digital media, is retiring at the end of the year, the company announced. We first heard he was out via a report from AllThingsD's Peter Kafka. Andrew House, an executive who runs Sony Computer Entertainment, the company's video-game division, will take over his duties. When Schaaff joined Sony, Businessweek called him the company's "renaissance geek." In 2010, he became president of Sony Network Entertainment, a unit which includes online music, video, and gaming services. Based in San Jose, Calif., Schaaff oversaw the launch of Music Unlimited, a Spotify-like music subscription service, and also led the company's network entertainment unit through an unfortunate incident where the PlayStation Network got hacked, exposing users' personal information.

Pandora today filed a lawsuit against the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in a bid to lower the licensing fees it pays out to songwriters, composers, and publishers to stream their music. First reported by Bloomberg, the suit follows more than a year of failed discussions between the two sides to reach a new rate, with Pandora now asking a US District Court in New York to implement a blanket licensing fee that would cover all work under ASCAP's representation. The organization's membership currently stands at over 435,000.

By Eliot Van Buskirk of Evolver.fm. We’ve heard rumors that Apple would start selling high-resolution music — as in “better than CD quality” — for years, but so far, “lossless” has been as good as it gets, and the only way to get it in iTunes is to rip your own CDs. Evolver.fm has received word from legendary sound engineer Tony Faulkner that Apple is accepting high-resolution music files for iTunes, even if it is not selling them (yet?). To be specific, Apple is asking for 96 kHz, 24-bit WAV files. The company could be doing that in order to...

Universal and Eminem group settle in historic digital case – MusicWeek

It threatened to set a precedent for music labels paying top artists higher digital royalties in future - but now Universal Music and Eminem production group FBT have settled out of court.
The historic case, which dated back to 2009, saw FBT Productions LLC argue that Eminem was entitled to 50% of net receipts for digital download royalties - more than his existing deal provides.
That's presumably because FBT/Eminem's contract with the major pre-dates the iTunes boom. Therefore, there is no stipulation over whether download revenues should be paid on a record sales basis (as with CDs) or a licence basis. The latter, predictably, offers a higher percentage.
FBT, owned by brothers Jeff and Mark Bass, signed Eminem to an exclusive recording deal in 1995.
Three years later, they signed a deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, owned by Universal, ahead of the release of Eminem's debut The Slim Shady LP - on which they can claim 40% of any royalties paid to Eminem.
Although FBT'...

‘John Carter’ Was Proof That Disney Needed ‘Star Wars’ – Silicon Alley

First Pixar, then Marvel and now Lucasfilm - entertainment giant Disney has a...

First Pixar, then Marvel and now Lucasfilm - entertainment giant Disney has a hunger for franchises in search for the next box-office hit. George Lucas was not being completely serious when he said on Tuesday night that Walt Disney would be his retirement fund. It is true that the creator of the Star Wars films is now one of Disney’s largest shareholders after agreeing this week to sell his company, Lucasfilm, to Disney for $4.05bn (£2.5bn) . But besides 40m Disney shares, the legendary director also gets a chunk of cash. When talks between Lucas and Robert Iger, the chairman and chief executive of Disney, first began 18 months ago, however, the Hollywood producer was under little pressure to sell. Star Wars, which first hit cinemas in 1975, remains a cash cow even though the last film in the series was released seven years ago. Sean McGowan, an analyst at Needham, estimates that about $140m of Star Wars toys will be sold this year alone. By contrast, this year has seen ...

The Indian Music Industry has filed a petition in support of India's IT Rules, which allow content to be taken down within 36 hours, without any notice to the content creator or uploader.
The filing says the strict rules are in the interest of streamlining the process, reports Tech Dirt.
The industry said: “Many websites allow streaming, reproducing, adapting, distributing, communication, transmitting, disseminating or displaying and downloading songs, without taking any license from copyright owners.
“Owners of websites are unknown, and it's impossible to track. However, ISPs have details of the owners of the website, and it is practically impossible for copyright owners to take action against people located outside India. The IT Rules allow the designated officers to block the contents of the website.”
India's copyright laws have notoriously been stringent. Late last year, at the request of a movie studio, ISPs were instructed by an India ...
