EU: Media Outlook 2025 overlooks intellectual property of works

Behind the reassuring figures of the Media Outlook 2025, several European producers’ organizations denounce the risk of Europe being transformed into a luxury provider for American platforms.

Two years after an initial version, the European Commission has published its Media Industry Outlook 2025, intended to offer a strategic vision of the European media sector – television, streaming, cinema, video games and press – and feed into future public policy. The document, dense and rich in data, aims to paint a picture of a creative and competitive ecosystem. But, for many professionals in the European audiovisual sector, it largely misses the main issue: the continent’s cultural and economic sovereignty, which involves the question of ownership of rights to works.
