France’s digital tax sparks Trump’s wrath — again

The amendment put forward in France by several Renaissance MPs, which increases taxation on digital giants by a factor of five, threatens, according to our information, to trigger a new trade war. At stake: retaliation on French products and a risk of breaking the Turnberry agreement between Washington and Brussels.
France has just reignited the fuse of an old tax dispute with the United States. An amendment tabled at the Assemblée Nationale by several MPs from Emmanuel Macron’s party, including Jean-René Cazeneuve, proposes a fivefold increase in the so-called « GAFAM » tax on digital giants. The amendment had been adopted in the Finance Committee, but as the 2026 Finance Bill could not be adopted as a whole, it will be entirely rediscussed…
