The European Parliament today adopted its own-initiative report on music streaming, in which it calls on the Commission to assess the impact of the current revenue distribution model for music streaming services, and calls on the industry to redress current imbalances. The European Parliament today adopted in plenary its own-initiative report on « cultural diversity and conditions for authors in the European music streaming market », prepared under the aegis of Spanish MEP Iban Garcia del Blanco. As such, this report has no legal scope. Citing IFPI figures, the Parliament points out that streaming « represents 67% of the music sector’s overall revenues », but considers that these revenues are not fairly distributed, and that new solutions must eventually be put in place. He also believes that new legislative provisions are needed to impose transparency on algorithms. While authors’ representatives welcome the adoption of the report, streaming platforms feel that it presents them in a negative light, even though they have a positive impact on the sector.
