The future of media in Europe: regulation of advertising on platforms and support for politically correct media
The Council today presented its conclusions on the future of media regulation in the EU. Audiovisual representatives welcome the support for similar advertising regulation of platforms and channels, which they have long been calling for. Furthermore, in an unprecedented move, the Council opens the door to a general authorization of state aid to the press in Europe, as long as it produces « valuable content », at the risk of subjecting the information sector to a political objective.
The Council of the EU today adopted its conclusions on the evaluation of the legal framework applicable to audiovisual media services and video-sharing platform services. The main aim is for Member States to influence the forthcoming revision of the Audiovisual Media Services (AVMS) Directive, but also the application of this text in conjunction with more general texts. The Council’s first request concerns the interaction of the AVMS Directive with the DSA and the E-Commerce Directive: « The relationship the AVMSD and other relevant EU legal acts, in particular the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the E-Commerce Directive, should be clear » This clarification has indeed been called for by market players as well as the European Parliament.
