Sports : towards a near-immediate removal of infringing broadcasts

We are publishing the draft opinion of MEP Tomasz Frankowski (EPP, Pol), in which he asks the European Parliament to support a solution for the quick removal – within thirty minutes – of infringing sports events, by the intermediaries hosting such content. He now needs to gather a majority, which seems likely, in view of what was said at an « exchange of views » meeting last Thursday.

As explained here, sports events organisers have been working hard for a year to convince the European institutions about the pressing need for a Europe-wide solution to fight against the illegal broadcast of matches and other championships. The health crisis, they explain, reinforces this necessity. Some countries, such as Spain, have been protecting the rights of their sports events’ organisers for some time, as they are considered to be a fundamental part of the economy and culture.
