« Fair share » : more transparency is required, but may not be wanted
It has been announced: the Commission will organise a wide-ranging consultation in early 2023 on the platform tax – also known as « fair share » – requested by some telecom operators. This will enable the gathering of factual elements on the current functioning of the market: in France, for example, platforms already make a significant contribution to the costs of telcos on the basis of paid interconnection agreements.
Last September, Renew MP Valérie Hayer took the initiative of sending an open letter to Ursula von der Leyen supporting the request of some telecommunication operators to obtain some kind of tax on platforms in order to finance their infrastructures. The letter was co-signed by several MEPs from almost all groups in the European Parliament. The Commission President replied to the letter at the end of December.
