Stéphane Séjourné: the promise of a European industrial policy, but with no resources

At a time when several historic European sectors such as automotive and steel are facing an unprecedented crisis, and sectors of the future lack access to the funds they would need to innovate, Stéphane Séjourné promises to bring about an industrial renewal of the Old Continent, but struggles to demonstrate that he will have the means to do so.

Former French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné was heard today by the European Parliament for the positions of European Commission Vice-President responsible for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy and Commissioner for Industry, SMEs and the Single Market. First observation: the tone and content of the hearings have changed compared to those held at the beginning of last week, with many remarks and questions relating to the impact of Donald Trump’s election in the United States.
