GAFA tax: doubling won’t appease Washington
France was thinking of calming things down vis-à-vis the US by doubling the GAFA tax rather than quintupling it, but we already know that Washington won’t bend.
Tensions between Paris and Washington over the GAFAM tax will not ease after French deputies voted to double the rate applicable to digital giants. As the National Assembly continued its examination of the 2026 Finance Bill on Tuesday evening, elected representatives adopted an amendment proposed by Jean-René Cazeneuve (Renaissance) raising the rate of the tax on digital services from 3% to 6%, while raising the threshold for liability from 750 million to 2 billion euros in worldwide sales.
