The CNC shows that the French film industry knows how to share its losses

According to a CNC study covering 1,823 French-produced films released between 2012 and 2021, the French film industry is projected to post a slight overall surplus of 289 million euros by the end of 2024. Behind this apparent profitability lies a model heavily subsidized by public aid, pre-financing, and the proliferation of distribution windows. While the system allows for risk-sharing and supports creative diversity, the economic success of these works ultimately depends on how they are received by the market and the public.
The CNC is baring its teeth. After years of « bashing, » which has intensified even further in recent months under political pressure, the National Film Center has pulled out its rulers and compasses to answer a legitimate and central question. Is French cinema profitable?…
