Relaunching the Capital Markets Union: European Parliament’s desperate plea
The European Parliament adopts a resolution aimed at revitalizing one of Brussels’ sea serpents: the Capital Markets Union. By once again giving the leading role to the Commission, this text follows in the footsteps of previous initiatives, rather than marking a strategic break, and this despite the fact that these previous attempts have not led to satisfactory results.
The European Parliament is today voting on a resolution tabled by MEP Aurore Lalucq (FR, S&D) calling for an unprecedented mobilization to strengthen the Union’s competitiveness and relaunch the Capital Markets Union (CMU) project. The text will be forwarded to the European Commission and aims to guide its future action, in a context marked by geopolitical tensions, American and Chinese competition and the slowdown in European economies.
