IA Act: France continues its offensive against copyright protection

The French government is not letting up, and continues to try to convince other member States to vote for an AI Act that would not include protections for the creative world. In doing so, France is taking the – deliberate? –  risk that within a few months, American AI law will be better for culture than European law.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: France doesn’t want copyright protection provisions in the future European AI Act. The training data transparency obligation, however vague, included in the text, does not suit Emmanuel Macron, Jean-Noël Barrot or Bruno Le Maire. Rima Abdul-Malak’s last speech as a Minister was on this subject was strikingly lackadaisical: speaking before an audience of authors, she didn’t dare acknowledge that she didn’t support this transparency obligation, preferring to abuse periphrasis to evade the issue.
