Mark Zückerberg no longer wants Meta to bow to government pressure: a message for the EU too
Mark Zuckerberg said he regretted that Meta had bowed to pressure from the US government by agreeing to censor content on the grounds that it was disinformation or Russian interference. He also warned the US authorities that the company was now structured to ensure that this kind of thing never happened again. At a time when European institutions are obsessed with ‘disinformation’, this letter should also be seen as a message to the old continent.
In an official letter to Jim Jordan, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives, Mark Zuckerberg is stepping out of his legendary reserve. The letter was sent as part of an investigation into disinformation and content moderation on social networks being carried out by the Republican member for Ohio. This investigation, which began in the summer of 2023, was launched thanks to the famous ‘Twitter files’, which, following Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, revealed that comments had been removed from the social network under pressure from the US government or federal institutions, particularly in connection with Covid, but also with the Hunter Biden laptop affair.
