Code of practice against disinformation: platforms get up and leave

The current European system for fighting misinformation on platforms set up by the « Code of Practice against Disinformation », could soon disappear. From then on, the major platforms could resume monetizing content previously considered disinformation. This will infuriate traditional media, which are subject to strict constraints in terms of both display advertising and content.

Since 2015 and the conclusions of the European Council, which expressed concern about disinformation campaigns originating in Russia, European institutions have been tormented by the subject of information manipulation, whether from Russia or elsewhere. At the Davos Forum in early 2024, Ursula von der Leyen declared the fight against disinformation to be her top priority. But the commitments the Commission had obtained from platforms in this area in the Code of Best Practice against Disinformation – in particular their remuneration of fact-checker networks and the demonetization of certain content deemed false or manipulative – could well go up in smoke in early 2025.
