Trump: French taxes on digital services, CNC and streaming in the spotlight
Donald Trump’s announcements on the US exit from the OECD tax agreement put French taxes on US companies, including taxes funding the Centre national du cinéma and the Centre national de la musique, in medium-term jeopardy.
Donald Trump does not want third countries to apply discriminatory and disproportionate taxes on US companies, and made this clear on Monday in a very official memorandum. If necessary, he will sanction countries that apply such taxes with punitive tariffs. At the same time, armed with this powerful new ally, American platforms will now be able to denounce instances in which they are subject to multiple taxes based on the same base. As we shall see, in this case, France has all the bad points. Firstly, with a digital services tax (DST) for which the French ministry of economics and finances does not provide details of revenue, no doubt fearing that this data would show that American companies are the main contributors, and secondly, with multiple taxes calculated on the same base as the DST : the CNC tax for cinema and, since last year, the streaming tax that funds the National Music Center (CNM).
