Copyright and Studio Ghibli: OpenAI plays with fire

With the launch of its image production tool last week, served by a worldwide buzz that generated the production of millions of images inspired by the style of Studio Ghibli, OpenAI is rekindling the debate over copyright compliance by generative AIs. The developer, who is already the subject of multiple lawsuits, could well arouse the ire of studios and distributors, but also visual artists, who have not yet taken action against him.

OpenAI is currently the subject of multiple lawsuits from book authors, press publishers, developers, YouTube video creators and music authors in the USA and Europe. None of them will be resolved, at the earliest, before the end of 2025. The common denominator of these lawsuits is that they accuse the company of having used ChatGPT with works protected by copyright, without authorization and, a fortiori, without remuneration. Until now, OpenAI had avoided the ire of visual and audiovisual artists… But the launch, to great publicity, of its image generation tool, could quickly change the game.
