Fable 5: When Reality Catches Up with European Talk of Sovereignty
As VivaTech and the presidential campaign bring promises of digital sovereignty and European AI back into the spotlight, the global suspension of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 serves as a reminder of a more uncomfortable reality. Europe lacks neither strategies, nor plans, nor rhetoric. Above all, it lacks the technological results that would allow it to no longer depend on decisions made elsewhere.
The timing of this affair is almost cruel. Just days after the presentation of the new European package on technological sovereignty, the European Commission found itself urgently commenting on a decision made in Washington regarding a product developed by an American company and used by organizations around the world, including in Europe. On June 12, Anthropic announced the immediate suspension of access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all foreign users, following a directive from the U.S. government based on national security considerations.
