Glenn Micallef rehashes Ursula von der Leyen’s talking points

The Commissioner-designate for Culture and Education added only meagre details to his mission statement, leaving observers wanting more. From his speech, we can only draw a few indications of the future Commission’s intentions: it will spend – once again – a lot of time regulating platforms, this time, in terms of screen time and harassment. For culture, a « European compass » will be erected, but its content remains uncertain, whilst no guarantee of maintaining the current budget has been provided.

Glenn Micallef is the Commissioner-designate for « intergenerationalequity, education, culture and sport ». Last on the official list of Commissioners, he was one of the first to be heard by the European Parliament. His hearing, which lasted the customary three hours, was conducted by the Strasbourg assembly’s Committee on Culture and Education, with guest appearances from the Committees on Civil Liberties, Legal Affairs and Social Affairs.
