Canal+: more talk to markets, less to subscribers

Canal+ is banking on international expansion and takeovers to emerge as a rival to the streaming giants after reaching 40 million subscribers, but a lack of global franchises, an aging technology platform and low international revenue per subscriber leave serious doubts about its ability to achieve this.

Canal+ is a listed company, which has taken its independence from the Vivendi galaxy. Its ambition is to compete with the major platforms, mainly American, that are setting the pace in streaming. Maxime Saada pushes this strategy once again in a interview with Le Figaro. The fruit of an intense takeover policy in recent years, with M7 and MultiChoice as major targets, the privately-owned TV group boasts over 40 million subscribers worldwide, making the sluggish domestic market a thing of the past.
