AgoraEU and the SMA Directive: Parliament Outlines Its Key Priorities
As the first deadlines for the AgoraEU program approach, MEPs are beginning to clarify their positions on the audiovisual sector. Balancing a desire to increase funding with caution regarding the AVMSD, they will need to adapt the framework without undermining the existing balance, even as non-European platforms have grown stronger.
2026 will be a pivotal year for the audiovisual sector at the European level. With just a few weeks to go before the presentation of the report on AgoraEU and amid the Commission’s ongoing review of the 2018 Audiovisual Media Services Directive, the first policy directions are beginning to emerge in the European Parliament. During a hearing held today, May 5, in the CULT Committee, several MEPs outlined their positions on both the future funding program integrated into the new AgoraEU project and the expected revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD).
