France’s snap election: the French political agenda and the European calendar collide

The dissolution of the Assemblée Nationale by Emmanuel Macron will cause cascading agenda difficulties at European level, to the detriment of France’s interests. Indeed, the French legislative elections campaign will be held at the same time as tough negotiations for the composition of the EU Commission and the distribution of roles in the European Parliament.

The exercise chosen by Emmanuel Macron is a perilous one. By dissolving the Assemblée Nationale yesterday following his party’s failure in the European election – where it obtained 10 fewer deputies than in 2019 – the head of state is taking a dangerous police gamble in France, but is also running the risk of weakening French influence at European level. Indeed, the early legislative election will take place on June 30 for the first round and on July 7, 2024…
