Thierry Breton’s theatrical resignation will soon be forgotten in Brussels

Thierry Breton slams the door on the European Commission a few weeks before the end of his mandate. He accuses Ursula von der Leyen of being behind the non-renewal of his post, which however seems to have been agreed with Paris, since the Elysée is proposing Stéphane Séjourné as his successor as of today. The technology and culture sectors will now focus on Thierry Breton’s successor.

Thierry Breton will no longer be sending letters to Elon Musk. After learning that his mandate as European Commissioner for the Internal Market would not be renewed, he has decided to resign, effective immediately. It’s a rare and particularly theatrical move. In general, European Commissioners do not resign at the end of their mandate, unless they are called back to their country to deal with an urgent situation.
