Hearings of future European Commissioners: the rules of the game

The European Parliament today held a briefing on the hearings of future European Commissioners. In view of the timetable, the future Commission looks unlikely to be up and running before January 2025. The European Parliament warns that the hearings will aim, in addition to skills criteria, to gauge the candidates’ compatibility with the priorities of Europeans as they emerged from the elections.

European Commissioners are proposed by the Presidency of the European Commission after negotiations with the member states, and then confirmed in office by the European Parliament. For this new mandate, the process has been delayed a little: the first hearings will take place on November 4, and the last on November 12.
