Sports events piracy : the European Commission remains irresolute
The debate on strengthening the rights of sports event organizers in the fight against piracy is progressing at European level. The European Commission nevertheless remains irresolute on the implementation of an obligation for intermediaries to quickly block access to illegally obtained matches and sports competitions.
The European Parliament is going ahead with its work aimed at strengthening the rights of sports event organizers, in order to enable them to fight more efficiently against the theft of their content by online pirates. Last week, a virtual stakeholder meeting took place on this topic, with the participation of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel and MEPs Angel Dzhambazki and Tomasz Frankowski, as well as representatives of UEFA and Europol. The services of Commissionner Thierry Breton are in charge of the subject of the rights of event organizers, while Mariya Gabriel is responsible for the general topic of sports activities in Europe.
